Caring for your boubou: workshop advice

A well-maintained boubou lasts years. A poorly washed one loses its colours in a few months. The difference comes down to a few simple habits.

Washing

Cold delicate wash, always. Printed cotton handles cold water very well, and it is heat that fades colours over time.

Delicate programme, minimal spin. If your machine has an adjustable spin speed, set it to the lowest. A hard spin distorts the fibres and creates stubborn creases.

Avoid powder detergent, which can leave visible residue on coloured fabrics. A mild liquid detergent is enough.

Drying

Flat or hung, never in the tumble dryer. The heat of the dryer shrinks cotton and dulls colours.

Keep the boubou out of direct sun while it dries as well. Direct sunlight fades prints over time, especially lighter tones.

Ironing

Printed cotton irons easily at a medium temperature. Iron inside out where possible to protect the colours.

If the piece has dried with creases, a burst of steam is usually enough to make them disappear without ironing the whole piece.

Storage

Fold or hang the boubou away from direct light. No special protection is needed, but avoid crushing it under other clothes for long periods.
